Step 7: Cutover and Decommission Legacy ETL

Disable legacy pipelines, verify zero traffic for 30+ days, decommission infrastructure, cancel licenses, archive legacy code for compliance and reference.

What you're doing in this step

After all in-scope pipelines are migrated and shadow-validated: disable legacy pipelines (don't delete; disable), monitor for any residual traffic to legacy outputs, run final reconciliation, decommission infrastructure (Informatica nodes, SSIS Catalog DBs, DataStage servers), cancel licenses (often the biggest savings), archive legacy code.

Recommended prompts

Use one of these to do the work in your IDE

Open the template to read it in full. Click Copy prompt to grab it (with your stack values pre-filled where they apply) — then paste into Claude Code, Cursor, or wherever you build.

Migration Rollback Plan

Plan recovery procedures for when migrations fail at any stage — from pre-cutover bugs to post-cutover production incidents.

Use this when: Pre-flight check — make sure rollback path is documented and rehearsed before pulling the plug

When you're done

Verify these in your own work before moving on

This is a checklist for you to mentally tick off in your repo and IDE — the site doesn't track it, you do.

  • Legacy ETL traffic = 0% for 30+ consecutive days
  • All consumers verified on new platform
  • Final backups complete
  • Legacy infrastructure decommissioned
  • License cancelled
  • Cost savings realized vs business case
  • Migration retrospective complete
Common pitfalls

What goes wrong at this step

  • Decommissioning too fast — 30-day buffer minimum
  • Forgetting license costs — inform vendor of non-renewal early
  • No data archive — historical pipeline definitions may be needed for compliance / audit
  • No retrospective — lessons not captured = repeated mistakes
